How to Use ChatGPT to Help You Study for GAMSAT
Studying for the GAMSAT can feel overwhelming. There's a lot to cover, and it's easy to get stuck or waste time on things that don't help. ChatGPT can be a useful study buddy that's there whenever you need it. Here's how I'd use it to get more out of your study sessions.
1. Understand Section 1 questions
Section 1 tests reasoning in the humanities. The questions usually test subtle reasoning rather than facts, which makes them tricky. ChatGPT can help you break a question down and explain the reasoning behind the answer. I've also made detailed walkthroughs of all the ACER Section 1 questions on my YouTube channel.
A prompt you could try:
- "Explain this GAMSAT Section 1 question step by step: [paste question]. Why is the correct answer A, and why are the other options wrong?"
Prompts like this help you understand the kind of reasoning Section 1 tests, so you go into the exam more confident.
2. Come up with Section 2 prompts
Section 2 tests written communication, and finding enough essay prompts to practise with can be hard. ChatGPT can make as many as you need.
Prompts you could try:
- "Give me 5 GAMSAT Section 2 prompts about technology and ethics."
- "Give me a challenging GAMSAT Section 2 quote prompt and suggest a few arguments I could use."
- "Here are my ideas for this essay. How could I develop them to show more critical thinking?"
Then use the prompts to write essays under timed conditions, just like on the day. That way your practice stays structured and varied.
3. Get feedback on your essays
Improving at Section 2 is all about feedback. ChatGPT can give you instant feedback on your writing so you can work on clarity, structure and argument.
Prompts you could try:
- "Here is my GAMSAT Section 2 essay: [paste essay]. How could I improve the structure and clarity?"
- "Check my essay for grammar and spelling mistakes and give me tips to make my arguments stronger."
- "What's weak about my introduction and conclusion, and how could I make them more persuasive?"
One warning: use it for feedback, not to write for you. ACER runs every essay through plagiarism software, so don't memorise or copy anything ChatGPT writes.
Feedback from a real person is still the most valuable, but ChatGPT can save you time and help you practise more.
4. Tips for using ChatGPT well
- Be specific. The more detail you put in your prompt, the better the answer.
- Use it alongside the official ACER practice papers and proper essay marking, not instead of them.
- Break big topics into smaller questions so each study session stays focused.
